The Annual Pioneers tour for Sustrans
veterans, old-stagers and friends, open to all comers
Part of a continuing program
of rides on the National Cycle Network led by John Grimshaw, CBE,
Founder
of Sustrans. This event is arranged for past and present staff of Sustrans, friends and supporters,
hosted by Graham Cornish.
Distance: 102 miles, of which 71 are traffic-free.
The Route combines the beaches and
estuaries of North Devon with the lush green valleys of the Torridge, the Tavy,
the Walkham and other evocative West Country rivers. From Ilfracombe on Devon's
north coast to Plymouth in the south, much of its length follows the western
flank of Dartmoor, Largely tracing the course of former railway
lines, the route takes you through tunnels and across the breathtaking viaducts
and bridges bequeathed by Victorian railway engineers. Between Tavistock and
Plymouth the Devon Coast to Coast route is known as the Drakes Trail, which is
being developed in to a fully traffic-free stretch of National Cycle Route.
